Lincoln Heights.
Some people have heard of this location before and are already picturing certain images of poverty, homelessness and darkness. This neighborhood is one of the poorest areas in our nation. You might be able to tell just by driving through, or maybe not. The people you would pass on your walk around might look like your average person. They might dress similarly to you, eat the same dinner, and even casually mention Jesus in normal conversation.
Regardless of how far away this location might be to you, these people are your neighbors. These people are your brothers and sisters in Christ. We are one body in Jesus.
The residents of this public housing authority might be living here for various reasons. The homes are owned by the government by government funding. These aparments are probably not as nice as the house you might be sitting in. But it is all that they can afford right now. You offering a hand by mopping up the floor, cleaning up trash on the playground, and spreading the word of Jesus around the area might be the perfect mission trip for you. You will have the opportunity to truly be a light in this community. Showing the love of God in a way that some of these residents might have never seen before. And most importantly, you will get to make the Holy Spirit present in this area, so that it is so filled and flowing with light, that it is obvious God resides there.
By coming on an Encounter trip to Washington DC, we get to not only clean up the physical grounds of this area, but clean up and mend the hearts of the people. Many people here might be hurt by the church. Broken by false teachings, offended by hypocritical christians, and even abused by stereotypes of modern Christianity. But all the really want and need, is some more Jesus.
